'Sink or Swim'

'Sink or Swim'

"On top of the small pay, modeling is often seen as a freelance profession if you aren't so fortunate to be Rosie Huntington-Whiteley."

For every Gisele Bundchen there are 10 more underpaid models, dying for her success. That figure is just anestimation, but the idea that many models are severely underpaid is hardly a secret. The media portrays a handful of very successful models, and makes them the poster children for what the modeling world is. In fact, there are models living from paycheck to paycheck. It is not uncommon for models to be paid in clothes, accessories, food or a small amount of money. For example, Ashley Mears, the author of "Pricing Beauty," highlighted the fact that models often receive somewhere around $150 for a full day's work.

On top of the small pay, modeling is often seen as a freelance profession if you aren't so fortunate to be Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Young women are sent out on several casting calls on a daily basis. Jobs are not guaranteed you have to go out and find them. In this profession it probably pays to know the right people. Imagine having to interview for a new job every day for a year! Essentially these women are living paycheck to paycheck. Mears also pointed out the industry's lack of health care. Unless you are Heidi Klum, you probably won't be able to keep your money even if you make a million dollars.

None of this is meant to knock the Kate Moss' and Naomi Campbell's of the world, but this just reminds you what the world is about. Modeling, like many careers out there all operate under the same motto 'sink or swim'. Either you make it or you go down trying.
