A Former Miss Universe, Naked with no Photoshopping

Jennifer Hawkins in Marie ClaireJennifer Hawkins in Marie ClaireMarie Claire is being bold by putting a Miss Universe on the cover of their magazine without first being photoshopped. That’s right- no photoshopping for the woman who was in 2004 deemed so beautiful that she won the title indicating the most beautiful woman in the world.

The former Miss Universe is named Jennifer Hawkins and the magazine is supposedly putting her on the cover to indicate that real women are indeed beautiful. The move was  probably also in reaction to some of the recent photoshopping scandals in which women were trimmed to microscopic proportions.

The proceeds from that issue will be donated to the Butterfly Foundation, which is an eating disorders support group.

Which Size Fits? Crystal Renn Faces Off with Her Smaller Counterpart

Sized 2Sized 2I am a big fan of the trend of giving magazine (and possibly catwalk) space to plus-sized models who actually might give a realistic impression of what a woman would actually look like in a particular item of clothing. The most notable cases are the spread in Vogue with the plus-sized models and the new spread with Crystal Renn at a healthy sized 12 and her sized 2 counterpart. All I have to say is, “You go girls!”Sized 12Sized 12

Hot or not?Hot or not?Ralph Lauren's ad of this woman sparked controversy at the end of September when it had a sneak-preview on Boing-Boing. Gee, I wonder why. As Paul Constant of The Stranger commented, "This person does not even look human."

All Women Are Beautiful

Still BeautifulStill BeautifulOne of the best "Curb Your Enthusiasm" scenes takes place in the episode in which Larry David and Richard Lewis assist a blind man moving. For Larry David, any kind of charity act is a huge stretch, and this is no better. The blind man is more than a little obsessive compulsive and works both Larry and Richard to the point of exhaustion, which is easy to do. At one point, the blind man asks Larry to describe his girlfriend, who is less than attractive. Larry describes her as primo, or model material, which the blind man believes without question. What the episode really brought home for me was how skewed each of our perceptions of beauty really are.

Eating Disorders

Very Thin ModelVery Thin ModelI had no serious idea of how scary bulimia and anorexia really were when I first heard of them in the 80's. "Binge and purge" sounded like a joke to me. As a person who totally avoids "purging" at all costs, I couldn't picture myself in the shoes of someone with an eating disorder.

The first person I met with an eating disorder was an extremely beautiful girl with what most would call a perfect body. On the outside, she had the perfect life.  Her family was the wealthiest in town and she drove a red hot convertible mustang.

Truth in Advertising: Airbrushing is BS

ModelModel      Via Betty Confidential.

According to the Telegraph ,  the Liberal Democrats Party, which supports many women's issues, is trying to go for a little more truth in advertising. Their goal is to either  ban airbrushed advertisements in magazines or have airbrushed magazine advertisements come with a "warning label" saying that the ads are airbrushed.

Maybe the label could read: It is humanly impossible for anyone to look this good naturally.
